Past week at our kindergarten was all about nature, bright colors, and children’s curiosity. Our youngest learners immersed themselves in the fascinating world of nature through the “Butterflies and Insects” thematic project.
Throughout this incredible week, the children didn’t just learn new facts—they experienced each topic through a rich variety of activities. The program combined mathematics, environmental science, multi-language learning (Bulgarian, Russian, and English), arts and crafts, sensory play, and active movement games.
During the week, the children discovered the secrets of the most famous insects: the butterfly, the bee, the caterpillar, the ladybug, the ant, and the grasshopper.
We counted the spots on the ladybugs’ wings, sorted butterflies by color and size, created patterns, counted honeycombs, and measured jump distances using non-standard units.
We conducted two exciting experiments! Using cotton balls and turmeric, the children saw firsthand how bees transfer pollen from flower to flower. We also made “paper grasshoppers” that hopped down an inclined board all by themselves thanks to vibration.
The children painted symmetrical butterflies using the monotype technique, made honeycombs using bubble wrap, modeled 3D caterpillars from playdough, folded paper ladybugs, and much more.
We enriched our vocabulary with the names of insects in three languages, learned poems, took breaks for brain gym activities, built a giant anthill out of pillows, and played active games.
To consolidate what we learned in the most natural and fun way, we organized a special outdoor walk to the playground at the end of the week!
The children turned into real little biologists. Together, we discovered hardworking ants in the grass, spotted a ladybug on a leaf, and watched butterflies and bees flying around the flowers.
The children demonstrated amazing knowledge—not only did they recognize the insects in their natural environment, but they also proudly named them in several languages!
