The Day of the National Awakeners – November 1st – was celebrated in an extraordinarily touching and memorable way at “Nikator” Private School. Students joined together in a festive program dedicated to the work of the enlighteners, scholars, and fighters for national freedom who have preserved the Bulgarian spirit through the centuries.
On the eve of the holiday, all the children at the school enthusiastically joined a collective initiative, creating and decorating a beautiful festive display board. With their drawings, messages, and portraits of prominent Bulgarian awakeners, the students transformed the school hallway into an inspiring gallery of memory and gratitude.
The festive program kicked off in high spirits as 2nd and 3rd-grade students welcomed their schoolmates with a performance of the popular song “They Teach You in School” (“Учат в школе”). With their clear and bright voices, the children brought smiles to everyone’s faces and shared the joy of learning and school life.
The centerpiece of the celebration was a captivating theatrical sketch prepared by primary school students. Through their performance, the young actors took the audience on an impressive journey through time, showcasing the evolution of Bulgarian education across different eras. They recreated the monastic school (kiliyno uchilishte), where the Cyrillic alphabet was learned with great patience and diligence; the girls’ school (divichesko uchilishte) as a symbol of enlightenment and emancipation; and the modern Bulgarian school environment — innovative, dynamic, and open to the world.
With great artistry, the young talents captured the atmosphere of each era and inspired the audience to reflect on the historical journey of Bulgarian education.
The finale of the celebration became a true emotional climax. Primary and middle school students took the stage alongside the youngest children from the preschool group. Together, they performed the song “Day of the Awakeners” (Den na buditeli), based on the verses of Angelina Zhekova. The pure voices of the children, combined with the meaningful message of the song, fostered a sense of continuity between generations and proved that the awakeners live on as long as we cherish their legacy in our hearts.
The celebration at “Nikator” Private School left a lasting impression on the children, showing them that education is the greatest gift and power, and that honoring the past is the foundation for a brighter future.
