Nature as a Classroom: An Exciting Journey into Time and Knowledge with the Students of “Nikator” Private Secondary School in the Village of Chavdar

Knowledge knows no boundaries, and the best lessons often take place outside the traditional classroom. On the occasion of the School Day, tied to the historical founding date of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum, the students of “Nikator” Private Secondary School experienced an unforgettable one-day expedition to the picturesque village of Chavdar, combining the spirit of a festive adventure, science, and Bulgarian traditions.

The adventure began right upon departure from Sofia, turning the bus into a true “School on Wheels” instead of a routine trip. Along the way, the children engaged in interactive activities: navigating with maps and route guides, learning about landforms, solving logic puzzles, and participating in STEM games that stimulate critical thinking.

Upon arriving in the village of Chavdar, the young explorers visited the “Topolnica” Archaeological Park and the Neolithic settlement. Guided by professional instructors, the students explored ancient crafts, learned how prehistoric people utilized natural materials in daily life, and toured authentically restored dwellings to gain insight into life during that distant era. In the spirit of a true expedition, an open-air lunch under the sunny sky brought plenty of festive cheer and joy to all participants.

The program continued at the village’s Folklore Center, where students immersed themselves in the atmosphere of the Bulgarian National Revival. Touring Revival-era houses and rich exhibitions, the children gained close acquaintance with Bulgarian lifestyle, customs, traditional crafts and their evolution over time, as well as the deep connection between culture, nature, and livelihoods.

Throughout the celebratory day, outdoor missions, games, and joint activities proved that when imagination is integrated with science and movement, learning becomes a genuine pleasure. The children not only enriched their knowledge of history, geography, and natural sciences, but also developed teamwork skills and a strong curiosity about the world. This special expedition to Chavdar left lasting memories with the students of “Nikator” Private Secondary School and once again proved that the most valuable lessons are those we experience together!
