As part of their extracurricular activities and literature classes, senior students from “Nikator” Private Secondary School conducted an exciting educational visit to the Ivan Vazov House-Museum in Sofia. For the high schoolers, this was a unique opportunity to step outside the boundaries of textbooks and touch the living history of the man rightfully called the “Patriarch of Bulgarian Literature.”
The house at the corner of “Ivan Vazov” and “Georgi S. Rakovski” streets, where the writer lived and worked from 1895 until his death in 1921, welcomed the students of “Nikator” School with its unique and solemn atmosphere.
The tour began on the first floor, where the living room is located. With great interest, the students listened to the guide’s talk about the daily life of the Vazov family, his habits, and the distinguished guests—prominent public figures, writers, and artists who regularly visited this home. They viewed the authentic furniture, the antique clock, and family relics that preserve the spirit of post-Liberation Bulgaria.
The greatest excitement among the students was sparked by the visit to the second floor, specifically the national poet’s study. There they saw up close:
The massive writing desk, on which some of his most significant works were created, including a large part of the novel Under the Yoke.
Vazov’s personal library, containing valuable editions in various languages.
The familiar sofa, where the poet spent his hours of rest and conversations with close friends (Prof. Ivan Shishmanov, Elin Pelin, etc.).
The taxidermied loyal dog Max, who was Vazov’s constant companion during his daily walks around Sofia.
The youth also visited the writer’s bedroom, which impressed them with its modesty and austerity—a testament to the spiritual aristocracy of a creator entirely dedicated to his people.
The visit of “Nikator” Private Secondary School to the “Ivan Vazov” House-Museum turned into much more than an ordinary school field trip. It was a true, emotional lesson in patriotism and national self-awareness.
